Men and Depression
According to the National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH), an estimated six million men in the United States have a depressive disorder, representing one-third of all adults living with depression. An under-recognized illness in men, depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide. In addition, men are four times more likely to die from suicide than women. To raise awareness about male depression, NIMH launched the "Real Men, Real Depression" campaign in April 2003. Utilizing a personal approach of men telling their true stories about dealing with depression, the campaign produced candid films detailing the recognition, treatment and recovery of the illness in a wide spectrum of men. Public service announcements have been made from the films and the website, menanddepression.nimh.nih.gov, features clips from the films, numerous publications in English and Spanish and other resources for men dealing with depression. Depression is highly treatable, and more than 80 percent of individuals seeking professional treatment experience relief of symptoms. Visit the website or call (866) 227-6464 for more information. And for an in-depth analysis of the severely depressed and suicidal mind, Thomas Joiner's book, Why People Die by Suicide, offers scientific and personal guidance for understanding suicide, the 4th leading cause of death in American adults.

Beat Workout Boredom
Make good use out of your kid's Playstation with the Gamebike, a device designed by orthopedic surgeons that turns any bike into a joystick for video games. The Gamebike allows riders to control games with a bicycle mounted on an indoor trainer or with the Gamebike Fitness Cycle, an all-in-one unit that combines a bike and controls. The interactive workout steers a racecar at the Daytona 500 or a motorcycle around a dirt track, all without leaving your living room. The device is adaptable to Playstation, Xbox and Gamecube, and is best used with games that involve racing or driving-the faster you pedal, the faster you go in the game. The Gamebike is priced at $139, and the Gamebike Fitness Cycle at $349. Both are available at www.gamebike.com .
